Before you proceed to the instructions below, you must have your own web account. If you don't have a web account, see the separate 'Web Account' topic.
Why FTP?
- You have graphic files related to your teaching that you would like to insert in your lecture notes.
- You have a number of gif animation files on your computer which will enhance your WebTycho classroom.
- You have video files on your computer which would be a help in students learning the chapter materials.
- You have lectures you recorded using Audacity or other sound editing program and would like to link to your class announcements, lectures or conferences.
- If you would rather the above course materials directly show/work in the class information instead of attaching them.
- All the above are possible in your WebTycho classroom. If the file sizes are not too large, you can attach the files and let the students open them in the classroom. If the file sizes are large (over 5M), it is better that the files are stored on the server and linked to your WebTycho classroom. By providing a web link, all your class members can view those files.
There are a number of ways to transfer files. See the following instructions to learn how to set up and use a Smart FTP program.
How to download SmartFTP?
Go to the following site and download the SmartFTP program. This software is free of charge and easy to use.
http://smartftp.com/download/
Save the download program to your C drive. Unless you give the location, by default it will be saved to your Program Files folder. Find the setup file. The setup file should look like this: . Double click the icon to open and RUN it. Follow the default instuctions. It will create an FTP icon on your desktop.
How to transfer files using SmartFTP?
- Click to open the SmartFTP Client icon on your desktop.

- Type your web account login name and password and the server address (sensei.ad.umuc.edu) in the blanks. Hit the Enter key or Go button at the end of the address section.
The example here is using Yeongok Vanderpool's web account. You need to useyour web account information.
- The 'sensei.asia.umuc.edu – yvanderpool' tab will appear with a 'www' folder in the area below. The 'www' folder is a file storage space on the server.
- Double click the 'www' folder. For the first time user, there should be a 'readme.txt' in the folder. This file contains short instructions on how to use your web account. In order to view this file, right click the file and select 'View".
Tips: See the names for the icons.

- Let's transfer an image file (let's name it 'arrow.jpg') from your desktop to your 'www' folder. Using the SmartFTP program is similar to using files on your computer. For organization, you first need to create a folder in your web account. Click the New Folder icon
and put the folder name. Double click the folder. Since the folder is new, there should be nothing in the space. Grab the image file on your computer and drop it in the empty space. That's all you need to do.
- Now you have a folder in your web account and an image file in it. Let's link it to your WT classroom.
How to link the image to your WT classroom?
- The URL for this image file should be: http://sensei.asia.umuc.edu/yvanderpool/folder/arrow.jpg
See the autopsy below:
- If you are using Text Formatting Editor for text writing, click the Insert Image icon
or go to Insert – Server Library Image. When the Server Library Image window opens type the above in the URL section.
You will see the image has been inserted in your text box. Click Submit to make it complete.
- If you are using an HTML textbox for your text, link your image file using theHTML tags similar to the following
If the image is used in the lecture notes ( example below), the HTML tags should look as follows .
Example
HTML tags: <p><center><img src="http://sensei.asia.umuc.edu/yvanderpool/folder/arrow.jpg"></center>
|
Tips: To go back to the previous folder or vice versa, you can use the Up
or arrow icons.
Next time you log in to your SmartFTP ; the login information will be remembered , you don't have to retype it again. Smart!
